The SuperTable engine is published under FSL-1.1-ALv2 (Functional Source License, Version 1.1, with Apache License 2.0 as the Future License) — install with pip install supertable, use it anywhere, including commercially. Each released version automatically converts to plain Apache 2.0 after two years. The registered Core stack is free for one admin with one supertable. Above that, you need a commercial license.

What happens to our data if Kladna Soft goes out of business?

You keep it. Your data is stored as standard Apache Parquet files on your own storage (Local, Redis, MinIO, S3, or Azure) — not in a proprietary format. Business and Enterprise tiers automatically mirror to Delta Lake and Iceberg, so Spark, Trino, Databricks, and dbt can read them natively without any translation layer. Enterprise customers also receive third-party source code escrow with release triggers covering insolvency, acquisition by a competitor, and support failure. In the worst case, you have both the data and the code — and the SuperTable engine itself is published under FSL-1.1-ALv2, which automatically converts each released version to Apache 2.0 after two years.

Why is Business sold in 10-process units instead of per-user?

A "process" is one running server — a WebUI, REST API, OData endpoint, or MCP server. One Business unit = 10 processes at €5,000/year. Need 20? Buy 2 units. Need 30? Buy 3. You can stack as many units as you need. Users and supertables are unlimited within Business — the price scales with how much you run, not who accesses it. Snowflake and Databricks charge for compute (DBUs / credits), which is why they're famous for surprise bills. Per-unit pricing means your CFO can forecast next year's data platform spend in five minutes.

What's the difference between pip install supertable and the Core registration?

pip install supertable gives you the open engine library (FSL-1.1-ALv2) — no signup, no credit card, no account. You embed it in your code, call it programmatically, and ship it with your app. Same engine that powers every paid tier.

Registering for Core (also free) unlocks the WebUI, REST API, OData, and MCP servers for a single admin with one supertable. Use it to evaluate the full platform on your laptop or run a personal project. When you need multi-user access or additional supertables, move to Business.

Is Community really free for production use?

Yes — the engine library (pip install supertable) is FSL-1.1-ALv2 and free anywhere, commercial use included. The registered Core stack is free for one admin with one supertable, which is enough for solo developers, side projects, education, registered non-profits, and 30-day commercial evaluations. Once you need multi-user access or additional supertables, you need Business. Your data, deployment, and configuration carry over without migration.

Can we start on Community and upgrade later?

Yes, and most customers do. Upgrade is a license key change — no data migration, no re-installation, no downtime. We'll honor a 20% founding-customer discount for 12 months if you upgrade within the first year of Community use.

Do you offer a managed cloud version?

Yes, as a Managed Hosting add-on (+50% of license, €1,000/mo minimum). We deploy, operate, patch, and back up Data Island in your cloud account (AWS, Azure, GCP) — single-tenant, never shared multi-tenant SaaS. This is deliberate. Most of our customers have data sovereignty, residency, or sector-specific (DORA, HIPAA, ITAR) constraints that rule out multi-tenant SaaS.

What is the FSL-1.1-ALv2 license? Is it open source?

FSL-1.1-ALv2 is the Functional Source License, Version 1.1, with Apache License 2.0 as the Future License. The source code is public on GitHub today and you can use it freely — including commercially — for any purpose except building a competing managed service. Two years after each release, that version automatically converts to plain Apache 2.0 with no restrictions at all. FSL is a fair-source license used by projects like Sentry and Keygen; it gives the community the audit, contribute, and self-host freedoms of OSS while keeping a narrow guardrail against hyperscaler resale.

Can we see the source code before buying?

Yes. The entire SuperTable engine source is public on GitHub under FSL-1.1-ALv2. Review it, audit it, run a security scan, ask your InfoSec team to pen-test it. Enterprise customers also get a signed security review package and, on request, access to our SBOM and the latest third-party pen-test report.

How do you compare on price to Databricks or Snowflake?

A typical midmarket Business-tier customer spends €15–25K/year with us, all-in (3–5 units, i.e. 30–50 processes, on annual billing). The same workload on Databricks averages €180K/year and Snowflake averages €120K/year (SpendHound 2026 benchmark of 1,000+ companies). Data Island is roughly one-tenth the total cost for 80% of common analytical workloads. We lose when you need ML notebooks at scale — that's still Databricks territory, and we'll say so.

What isn't included? Where will I need to pay more?

Business already includes Data Island Core, Lighthouse AI, Spark SQL, offline / air-gapped deployment, and unlimited users and supertables — everything that used to be sold as separate add-ons. Four optional services remain on top: Premium Support (€2,500/mo) for 24/7 1-hour SLA, Managed Hosting (+50% of license) if you want us to operate it, Onboarding (€12,500 one-time) for guided implementation, and a Compliance Package (€6,000/yr) for SOC 2 / DORA evidence kits. Everything else — features, updates, bug fixes, security patches — is included in your license.

Do you offer discounts for non-profits, startups, or academic institutions?

Community (both the pip install engine and the registered Core stack) is free for all three. Above that, registered non-profits get 50% off Business. Accelerator-backed startups get 6 months free on Business. Academic research groups get free Business-tier licenses for research projects — just email us.
